Safe is always relative :)
If we have a new release with KDE 4.8, it would be the same though, if you do an update now or then instead of a fresh install. So it's for you to decide if you need 4.8.0 at this time.

Did you check if KDE presents itself as selection (in KDM, press the blue button on the left side of the login section and see if it lists KDE plasma workspace?). If not, it did not fully install... you can try to follow this:

http://www.netrunner-os.com/forums/installation-setup/important-read-before-update/#p170

Otherwise, if you don't have any data that needs to be safed, I would recommend a new install.

It did not work for me (HP XW 9400 workstation, Nvidia FX Quadro 1500). Login screen appears, but XServer does not start. Is there a covenient way to downgrade to 4.7.4. or do I have to reinstall the system ?

It should be safe, though KDE 4.8 may come with its own quirks and edges. Therefore you can make the decision to add the backport and try it out or leave Netrunner at stable 4.7.4.
I had no problems on my asus eeepc.

Is in safe? I heard good opinions about the new 4.8, but it's out of the main repo... Any good or bad experience? I have Intel Core2 Duo T8100 @ 2.10GHz with Intel graphics accelerator (not a video card).
