Hi-I thought I would give Netrunner a try but, disappointingly, I've run into major problems with sound. My graphics card (integrated Radeon 4200, disabled in the bios)) has a HDMI output, which may or may not be confusing the software. There is no sound when playing a flash video. I can play CDs, but only with Dragon Player. VCL produces nothing on CD or DVD. I do, however, have system sounds. The sound card is a Xonar Essence ST. I have had some issues with other distros; neither Mint KDE or Kubuntu would remember my Alsa settings on reboot (I listen over headphones), but everything worked once I had reset Alsa. There were no problems with Pclinuxos, but it just broke too easily! Predictably, everything functions perfectly in Windows 7. Can anyone help ?

Let's start with conclusions ;)

- System sounds work

- Audio CDs work in Dragon player

- No sound in VLC player

- No sound in flash videos

And some questions:

- Which browser were you using when trying to watch a flash video? Firefox? What about Konqueror or Chromium or any other?

- Does Amarok or Clementine work with mp3 or other formats?

- Did you install pulseaudio?

Let's try the following general steps:

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but please left click on KMix in System Tray > Mixer. Make sure everything is OK there. Now, in the same window, go to Settings > Audio Setup. There should be couple of devices shown for every category in Device Preference tab. Go to, e.g., Audio Playback > Music and test different devices. Some may work, some not (use "Test" button at the bottom). You can change which one will be used by moving it to the top of the list.

Another thing you should check out is Backend tab of the same window. If VLC is listed as the backend, try starting Synaptic Package Manager and installing phonon-backend-gstreamer package. Change backend to GStreamer and see how the sound behaves.

If nothing else helped, you may try actually installing pulseaudio and see how it works. There was a discussion about no sound issue recently, make sure you check it out.

Many thanks for the prompt reply to my post. I had already seen the "Discussion" link, and done some trawling of the internet on this subject. I think I've pretty much fixed the problem by installing Pulseaudio and most of its associated packages. I now have sound from all of the installed media players (including Banshee) EXCEPT for Gnome MPlayer- playback from this is very choppy. I haven't been able to find any setting in "Audio Output" that fixes this. No big deal, but if anyone has the answer, I would be grateful to hear from them. I am now able to play CDs, DVDs, music files and flash video without issue. I have have also upgraded the system an installed the proprietary driver for my graphics card. I was afraid this might mess the sound up again, but not so. The only thing that I have found slightly confusing is that Pulseaudio calls my Xonar sound card "CM18788 Oxygen HD audio", unlike ALSA- I assume that they are one and the same (the other choice is "Radeon 4200 HD"). One last question; KDE keeps asking me if it should forget a list of sound devices- mostly "Xonar ST" entries. Is it safe to do this, or do I risk losing the sound again ?

I would love to install Netrunner, but unfortunately no sound is an issue for me too.  I got it working by installing pulse audio and the Chromium Browser, however I would rather use Firefox.  Like the Linux Outlaws say, "I'll be keeping an eye on Netrunner", and if the lack of proper sound support can be improved, I would love to install and use it, as it is a very beautiful distribution.

Hello Joe_Linux,

before you installed pulseaudio, there was no sound at all?

Did you check KMix Mixer volume levels were all up?

Hey Everyone,

I am having the same sound issues as well (which is unfortunate, because otherwise, I am REALLY lovin' the crap outta this distro)!    I have re-installed Netrunner probably something like 5 times now, and each time, it goes something like this: fresh install, everything works beautifully.  I start installing the software I like, get it just how I want it.  Once I restart, I get a bunch of crash reports – KJockey is one I recall seeing often (perhaps it is the culprit, but I don't really know how to access it – total noob).  So, I fill out the crash report and shut down as normal.  When I restart, no sound.  Again, this has happened like 4 or 5 times.  I tried to change settings in Kmix as suggested above, but when I click on it, the program won't start.  Any idea how to make it functional again?  Thanks kindly.  -Chris

Hey Everyone,

Quick update – I seem to have found the problem!  After upgrading to KDE 4.8, somehow the mixer had HDMI rather than the analog output selected as my default (I have my sound going the old fashioned way through my soundcard).  So, to the users in my same 'noob-boat,' here's what might help:  Look at the bottom right corner of your desktop in the panel for the icon that looks like a speaker with sound waves coming out.  Double-click it and make sure your mixer levels are set appropriately for the device you are using for sound output.  Also, I might highly recommend the "select master channel" choice under settings to set your external volume control (hot key/ media keys) to the appropriate sound source.  Hope this helps . . . back to reveling in my favorite Linux distro yet!

Cheers,

Chris

Chris,

Thanks. The "Set master channel" option was exactly the thing I was looking for to stop HDMI showing up by default in Kmix, rather than my internal audio. Although I had to quit and relaunch kmix before it took effect.

So, thanks!
