4.1 64 bit:

Could not mount NTFS drive at first, had to reinstall NTFS-3g to. (once)

Could not log in anymore after "upgrading" to KDE 4.8 as someone described around here… (once)

A Java desktop application did not start Java JRE at all. Had to install OpenJDK 7, now the application runs! (twice)

Also, the chosen default java application (java -jar) is not kept permanently… what a nuisance!

Hello xanabras,

thanks for reporting back on netrunner 4.1.

For the problems listed, can you check if they are also kubuntu-related?

That will make spotting and fixing them in next version a lot easier, if they also remain in next "vanilla" kubuntu.

Hello, starbuck!

I do not have time or room anymore to test Kubuntu as well. Latest Ubuntu and Kubuntu lost the Internet connection repeatedly on two computers here… I will not try Ubuntu again! My aim is USING a reliable Linux for real work everyday, that is, a system that will not pathetically fail at the most common and elementary operations (applications that will open everytime within seconds, not minutes, file/folder management, copy/moving many large files, permanent default applications, audio, video, email with working send link from browsers, sound embedded in web pages really playing, djvu and pdf plugins but no awkward happenings with browsers, etc.). Most people around are discussing and comparing distros without any reference to any real tasks ever… Moreover, they seem overly concerned with running them on ridiculously old computers that no one should care about nowadays.

For years now I have seriously tried many distros. Presently, only Pardus and Netrunner qualify for me. PCLinuxOS works again now, it was the best once, but has new flaws. All three have faults, of course. I thank you for Netrunner.

There are so very many people doing Linux all too independently, for so long, yet nobody has made a capable, reliable, working alternative to Windows yet. Most distros are defective and lacking, from the awful text rendering way upwards. The great number of them specialising in functions of no general interest whatsoever demonstrates it is no longer an objective, if it ever was. All for none and none for all!

Hi xanabras,

what I meant with Kubuntu is not testing yourself, just see if the issue is already known to be reported with Kubuntu.

I understand your reasoning with regards to the current situation, and we are working on solving the problems you mentioned consistently with Netrunner, concentrating fully on KDE and make everything work under this desktop (also non-kde stuff like gtk2, gtk3 and even wine).

Our partnership with Mint ensures that at least two distros here work together and not all by themselves, and as MintKDE and Netrunner share a common base, both go from Kubuntu to start with.

So all three distros are more or less on the same route here technology wise, while still each one has its own track.

I assume we need 2-3 more iterations to really go beyond what everyone else is doing, so don't give up just yet! smile

Thank you very much for your clear answer, starbuck. Nothing like the arrogance and aloofness of too many vain people who keep churning out totally useless Linux distros.

I am well aware that the Netrunner team is currently the only one moving fast and right to get us a sound system. No doubt your partnership with Mint is advantageous, provided you will not share their ghastly cult manners or the long-standing quirks (not just faults as usual, also most irritating customisations which can only please one presumptuous maniac) of their flashy derivations of Ubuntu and of Debian (dropped already).

I, for one, have had plenty enough of blatantly faulty, highly lacking operating systems made by boastful individuals in vain competition while their worshippers dare not expose any of their severe faults and omissions.

Netrunner 4.1 (64 bit) is now running on four computers here, including a Mac mini. May I object that you should not impose any Firefox extensions or similar extras to someone else's liking on the user.

Kind regards.

VLC Player is indispensable, as is SMplayer (still at version 0.6.9!), in order to play video, most especially from Matroska (.mkv) files, conveniently and — hopefully — smoothly as well (another major problem ignored by most people: hiccups and other troubles in running video files).

> VLC 2.0 “Twoflower” has been released! PPA Ubuntu and LinuxMint

http://www.unixmen.com/vlc-2-0-twoflower-has-been-released-ppa-ubuntu-and-linuxmint/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=vlc-2-0-twoflower-has-been-released-ppa-ubuntu-and-linuxmint

I was able to install VLC Player 2 from ppa:n-muench/vlc. However, a lot of software (including SMPlayer) was deleted, I re-installed all of it next, without any apparent incompatibility arising.

While I am aware that software integration in a distro may not be easy or straightforward, I wish the latest versions were incorporated and repositories were already enabled in order to update them troublelessly.

Including the latest versions of the interface(s) (XFCE or, rather, KDE) may well be even harder, yet again I wish I found them up to date in the latest distro versions. I am sure I am not the only one deploring an out-of-date system.

Thank you for your attention.

Well, we are based on Kubuntu and Ubuntu for that matter, so when oneiric repositories do not offer the latest KDE, then you need to manually add the backport-ppa for example to get KDE 4.8. Since there might be incompatibilities and other issues arising from updating to 4.8, we do not enable those ppas by default (I doubt running the latest and greatest always right from the start is better than a stable 4.7.4), but this choice is up to each user by adding the ppas himself. We will decide to provide stable versions probably with our update Dryland 4.2, so until then you can either fastforward on own risk or wait until everything is well and tested and officially given the green light. smile

Thanks, again, starbuck. I understand what you told me. Now, you might be interested in looking into the following systematic faults with software under Netrunner.

Lately, at least some of my useful Chromium extensions (sendlink, historious, pinboard, …, page inside links capture) will not work anymore…. I have to disable and re-enable them to get them working again!

Even more annoyingly, Ark keeps being forgotten as the default application to open .zip and .rar archives with! Also, when Ark does open, say, a .rar file, the icons inside this archive show wrong (say, an archive icon instead of the folder icon). Java (as told earlier, I had to install OpenJDK JRE for java apps to start at all), too!!! Almost everytime I must use "Open with.." to reassign "java -jar" (remember box ticked, of course) for an indispensable java application here to start with Java instead of opening with Ark!

Otherwise, Netrunner is going fine; fast enough, applications will not take ages to launch. In particular, Chromium does not fail to open, contrary to what happened with Pardus most of the time. No big bad surprises so far…, just nagging details. I am very interested in its development and much regret not being able to help you at the present.

Thank you again, starbuck. All the best!

Hello, again, starbuck! I have been using Netrunner 64 bit day and night. May I report on two nagging faults with software.

Zip files will not open with the default application (Ark) if I made Java applications start with "java -jar" by default… If I reset zip files to open with Ark by default, then Java applications will open with Ark instead of launching. What a nuisance!

Chrome is increasingly reluctant to open (just like in other Linuxes) and now hangs at the start! I have to close it and reopen it, then it works fine. I will destroy its folder with settings, history, etc. Chromium/Chrome is even more unreliable than Firefox, yet searching in history and downloads is much better. People making either browser have not a clue to intensive browsing, besides both browsers hang painfully when tabs opened are many. No browser made anywhere so far has smart, useful facilities for bookmarks and searches into the past browsing…

Kind regards and best wishes for Netrunner, currently the best one of two or three useful, working Linux operating systems for the desktop.

Thanks xanabras,

the java issue, we will have a look for next version.

As for the browsers, we are thinking of adding rekonq as an default installed option to firefox (even if rekonq is relative new, we believe as a native browser it could become very useful and a true competitor in the not so distant future). We definately are working on some stuff there regarding the bookmark concept, as with mozilla appstore and all the html5/cloud stuff happening, things are getting pretty interesting in that area! popcorn

Yes, please, starbuck, fix the JRE for good and make applications (java or not) launch with default everytime!

I have just had an unpleasant experience with imagemagick under Netrunner 64 bit on an i5 PC with 4G RAM:

> convert *.jpg foo.pdf

It did eventually make a pdf out of some four hundred pictures, yet it took too long (as compared to Pardus) and then I had to reboot the computer…. Tried this four times, always the same! I am telling you this because such memory leak might have much wider effects.

Hello, again, everybody!

Netrunner fails to mount HFS+ drives. Ubuntu can… Could this be fixed, please?

A Samba share from a Mac could not be read for copying. Bad.

Folders on the Desktop cannot be read for FTP or SSH… Bizarre!

Netrunner 64-bit is still running on several computers here, as it is for me the "best" Linux system currently. In one of these, the sound level is now near zero at every start-up, I could not fix this! Also, the calendar went blank. Maybe the forthcoming version of the KDE desktop will have less quirks… Maybe.

I trust Netrunner 4.2 will have VLC Player 2 and other updated crucial software, all browsers (each of which has its own usefulness, hindrances as well), Claws-Mail, Sylpheed.

A big thanks to Starbuck and everyone else making Netrunner.

That does indeed sound bizarre.

We are preparing 4.2 to have major updates like vlc 2, KDE 4.8.2, and more, hopefully we also have the sound level issue fixed with that.

For any technical issue, it often helps to search for Kubuntu + problem, as we're actually pretty close to Kubuntu default internal setup:

Thanks for your help. HFSutils  installed.

> sudo fdisk -l

> WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdh'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. Ridiculous! Cannot mount the HFS+ drive anyway, indeed it was formatted with a GUID table, as required by the MacOS X operating system currently..

Is there a solution, I wonder.

Hi xanabras

You need the hfsplus tool.

sudo apt-get install hfsplus

Thanks, Fred. HFSplus, too, is installed. I fear GPT/GUI formats will not mount anyway. Linux is lagging behind in several respects, sometimes even more than Win.

Meanwhile, after kernel and other updates, Chromium windows become transparent here all too often, I will have to re-install Netrunner or other system, I am afraid.

Incidentally, nobody seems to react to the very bad news from Adobe, no more Flash for Linux except as integrated in Chrome/Chromium! Mozilla do not care; neither do others, it seems. Flash is necessary for many things, including a few most important ones for me. Linux is going down… Problems with Java, problems with Flash, problems with browsers anyway.
