Netrunner 12.12.1

IMPORTANT:

To upgrade your system the first time, do not use MUON!

After Installation, please update from KDE 4.9.4 to 4.10.3:
Start Menu – System – Synaptic Package Manager, click “Reload”, then “Mark all Updates”, then “Apply”!

At the error message about Muon, just close the message window and click “Apply” in Synaptic again, which should fix Muon and update it to 2.0!
sudo apt-get update, then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade also works fine!
Otherwise Muon may break with the latest Kubuntu 4.10.x packages, so it is advised to do the initial update right after installation.
Muon will then update itself to 2.0, so after that Muon should work fine again!

Do I need to re install from the previous 12.12?

Use Muon or “sudo apt-get dist-upgrade” to update to the latest Packages, then you’re pretty much at 12.12.1.

    Good stuff, thanks!

Short comment: I find the naming pretty confusing

  • Evropi

Umm… ‘GNU/Linux Kernel’? Pretty sure GNU is not used for the Linux kernel… :P

    • Starbuck2001

Hehe, it’s GNU “plus” the Linux kernel ;)

I have been using 12.12 and I have no interest in changing anything.  It runs great and all of the applications work as expected.  I have Windows 7 Ultima install with the furnished Oracle system and it works better than any other Linux system I have tried over the past several years.  I even dumped SLED, a paid subscription, because I could not get the printer to work or others programs I prefer to use.  I have not updated to 12.121, because my past experience has taught me, “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.”

    Hello everyone

I use Netrunner for along time and I update it constantly, but I today when turning on the computer and the appearance of the desktop and a password and that sure I could not access or open operatin system how can solve this problem

So I need your urgent assistance

  • Pat

Thanks Starbuck for a so far great distro! I did have to “sudo apt-get -f install” twice so far to fix buggy packages, but everything appears to be running smoothly for me on the 64 bit version. I am really liking Netrunner and KDE. Lightning fast on my self built machine. I used to be exclusively Gnome but I got to say…KDE 4.10.2 and Netrunner 12.12 is sweet. By the way, I installed it via an old 2GB USB stick made with USB Image Writer so that works.

  • PulsatingQuasar

Pretty disappointing this release. I downloaded the 64-bit DVD, installed it, installed all updates, rebooted and ….. broken!!

After I logged back in I was presented with a blank desktop. I tried twice and twice I ran in to problems. I don’t really trust a desktop environment that can’t update itself which unfortunately is all to common in the Linux world. Luckily OpenSUSE just works. This was a waste of time.

I should have known I would run in to problems because the second time before updating I went to hardware drivers to pick an NVidia driver. I saw 2 experimental and 2 normal there without a description. So which are you supposed to pick then of the normal? And in the end installation failed.

      Hello Quasar,
I assume you used Muon to update?
Muon has apparently an issue with making the upgrade from KDE 4.9.4 to recent 4.10.2 in the Kubuntu repos.
It is advised to use Synaptic (which is also shipped) to perform a full update to KDE 4.10.2 or do the update with “sudo apt-get dist-upgrade”.
Muon 2.0, which is installed with the upgrade, seems to have fixed that issue, so it is safe again to use after that.

Hi Runners, I finished to install this OS and the first impression was… WOW… It requires a lot of resources, I’m refering to the graphic part..because on my netbook (Asus eeepc 1011PX) it’s slow…..However I’m very impressed and I like this OS. For me it’s the best. GOOD JOB all you guys, I hope that one day I’ll be helpful. KEEP RUNNING!

  • Nawand Sadeqi

Two problems since I meet, first it loads automatically from the boot instead my windows 7 where all my suff is. Secondly, sound does not work proprely, time to time disappeares.

  • deep_dish

    Nice work.
Giving it a try on desktop and laptop – works flawlessly on both so far.

A word of advice – there’s a setting somewhere in Akonadi/Nepomuk, that seems peculiar to *buntu based distros. It uses all available system resources while it indexes the hard drive. If, like me, you install to a hard drive with a 300Gig home partition that’s stuffed nearly to capacity, the computer becomes unusable for some time.
This service should ideally ask the user, on first boot, if s/he wants to enable the service with a warming that it might make the system unresponsive, or be configured to run in the background, as, for example, Slackware does.
